Can a Muslim hold Tezos?8 Shariah criteria
8 pass · 0 caution · 0 failHolding tez pays nothing; rewards are variable payments for baking, but delegators can earn them without risk.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Tezos has no lending or interest function at protocol level. Bakers earn variable rewards for producing and attesting blocks, and stakers lock tez as part of the baker's deposit and can be slashed with it, which is payment for work with real risk. Delegators, however, keep their tez spendable, bear no penalty if the baker misbehaves and still share rewards, a passive return through protocol delegation, so the score is 90 rather than 100. Islamic Finance Guru lists Tezos as halal, and CryptoUmmah finds no interest mechanism.
Tez is the native coin of a live smart-contract network used for fees, baking and governance.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). Tez pays transaction and storage fees, secures the chain through baking and staking, and gives bakers a vote on upgrades. Islamic Finance Guru, the authoritative source, lists it as halal, so the general scholarly debate about crypto is reflected in confidence rather than in this score.
Tez has no gambling mechanics; it is the fee and staking coin of a general-purpose chain.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. Tez has no lottery, prediction or meme features, and CryptoUmmah calls any maysir incidental. Some applications built on Tezos may involve speculation, but that is not a feature of the coin. The criterion is at the maximum.
There is no issuer income: fees go to bakers and new tez rewards validation.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. Tezos has no company revenue tied to the coin; users pay fees to bakers and part of storage costs is burned, and new tez is issued as baking rewards. The Tezos Foundation funds development from its treasury. No source shows interest-based or other impermissible income, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Rules, supply and upgrades are public, but supply is uncapped and the 2017 token sale ended in a $25 million class-action settlement.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. Tezos is transparent: code is open source, upgrades are voted on-chain and supply data is public (1,117,637,417 XTZ total on 1 October 2026). Two points lower the score within the pass band: tez has no maximum supply, so new issuance continues, and a class action over the 2017 token sale was settled for $25 million in 2020 without a ruling. CryptoUmmah notes that the ICO distribution favoured insiders and early investors.
Tez is used for fees, baking, staking and governance on a general-purpose smart-contract chain.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. Tez pays for transactions and storage, secures the network and is used in governance; the chain hosts smart contracts, digital art and the Etherlink layer 2. These are permissible uses, and no impermissible use of the coin itself is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Fully paid spot XTZ is widely available and can be held, delegated or staked from a self-custody wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. XTZ trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and can be held in self-custody, where it can also be delegated or staked directly. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leverage, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Tezos provides open infrastructure with on-chain governance; no concrete harm is documented.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. Tezos offers an open smart-contract platform whose rules can be changed only by on-chain vote, and its developers are working on post-quantum security. No source shows the network being used mainly for fraud or sanctions evasion, so the criterion is at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying XTZ with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and the coins can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL asset.
No US spot fund holding XTZ was found as of 1 October 2026. A fund that holds XTZ itself would be judged like spot; any lending of the coins inside a product would need checking.
Tez pays network fees but is not widely used as money. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Staking tez locks it as part of a baker's deposit, earns variable rewards that depend on the baker's performance and can be slashed with the baker. This is payment for work with risk. Delegating earns rewards without risk, a more passive arrangement; custodial products promising fixed returns should be checked.
Margin trading in XTZ is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
XTZ futures and perpetual contracts are traded on large exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending XTZ through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Yield products beyond native baking, staking and delegation, such as lending markets or exchange 'earn' accounts, may get their return from lending and must be checked; lending-based yield fails.
Scholars quotes
The opinion on this is the same as doing the same with any halal assets such as shares – 1) is permissible, 2) is more debatable and there are differing opinions on short-term trading. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article it is not necessary to substantiate the permissibility of something as long as there are no prohibited factors involved in it or surrounding it.Penggunaan cryptocurrency sebagai mata uang hukumnya haram, karena mengandung gharar (ketidakjelasan), dharar (bahaya) dan bertentangan dengan Undang-Undang nomor 7 tahun 2011 tentang Mata Uang dan Peraturan Bank Indonesia nomor 17 tahun 2015 tentang Kewajiban Penggunaan Rupiah di Wilayah Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. The SAC has also resolved that investment and trading of Digital Assets that fulfil the above requirements and which are traded on Digital Asset Exchange (DAX) registered with SC are permissible.Third: In light of the above and given the significant risks associated with this type of currencies and the instability of their transactions, the Council of the Academy recommends pursuing research and studies on issues affecting its ruling.Bitcoin is a digital currency that does not meet the legal and Sharia criteria that make it a currency subject to the rulings of dealing with official legal currencies recognized internationally. According to research and opinion of experts so far, cryptocurrency is not considered ‘ maal ’ (wealth) in Sharia.Muhammadiyah memandang transaksi dan investasi kripto pada dasarnya mubah (boleh) tetapi dengan syarat tertentu. Our current position is 'tawaquf'; we can't say it is halal or haram, but we say it is better not to engage in itAI-assisted analysis checked against sources.
