Can a Muslim hold Terra Classic?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failStaking rewards are variable payments for securing the chain, with slashing; delegators earn them passively, but nothing is lent and no new LUNC is minted.
Riba means interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Holding LUNC pays nothing. Validators secure the chain and can be slashed 5% for double-signing and 0.01% for downtime; holders who delegate to them share variable rewards without doing the work themselves. The mint module shows zero inflation, so rewards come from network fees and taxes rather than new coins. CryptoUmmah notes minor interest-like elements in rewards. Because delegation is protocol-level and passive, the score is set at 90 within pass.
LUNC is the fee and staking token of a working blockchain.
Mal is property that Islamic law recognises as having value and that can be owned and traded. LUNC pays fees and secures the Terra Classic chain, which was producing blocks at height 30,650,390 on 1 October 2026 with about 906.8 billion LUNC staked. The criterion gets the maximum score; the general disagreement among tier-1 bodies about cryptocurrency is reflected in confidence.
LUNC has no gambling mechanics, but its market is speculative and most trading is in futures.
Maysir is gambling: winning or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. LUNC has no chance-based payout. Its market is driven largely by speculation on burns: on 1 October 2026 perpetual futures were about 79% of LUNC volume on Binance and Bybit combined (single-day snapshot), and CryptoUmmah scores LUNC's speculation risk as moderate. The futures dominance lowers the score within pass.
There is no company earning for holders; the chain collects fees and a burn tax.
This criterion asks how the issuer or protocol earns. Terraform Labs, the original company, no longer runs the chain. The network collects transaction fees and a 1.5% burn tax; part of the tax is burned and the rest supports network functions under the treasury parameters. The old UST stablecoin and its interest-paying Anchor protocol are no longer part of LUNC's economics. No current impermissible income stream was found, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
The chain's founders were found to have committed fraud, it is now maintained by volunteers, and it needed a mandatory fix for a critical vulnerability in September 2026.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information in a deal. Supply, staking, inflation and tax are visible on-chain. But there are concrete concerns. A US jury found Terraform Labs liable for securities fraud in 2024 and co-founder Do Kwon was sentenced to 15 years in December 2025 for the fraud behind the collapse. The chain is now maintained by a volunteer community with limited resources; on 14 September 2026 it had to ship a mandatory release for a critical vulnerability in its smart-contract components. CryptoUmmah also scores team transparency and audit quality low.
The criterion is caution.
LUNC is used to pay fees, stake and vote on the Terra Classic chain.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. LUNC pays transaction fees, secures the chain through staking and votes on governance proposals. No impermissible primary use was found, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
Fully paid spot LUNC is available on major exchanges and can be held in one's own wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. LUNC trades spot with full payment and delivery, for example on Binance's LUNC/USDT pair, and can be held in a self-custody Terra Classic wallet. Ownership does not depend on derivatives, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
The chain still works for its users, but it is the remnant of a collapse that caused an estimated $40 billion of losses.
Maslahah weighs public benefit against harm. Terra Classic continues as a working, community-run chain. But it is the same chain on which the TerraUSD collapse wiped out an estimated $40 billion in 2022, much of it from ordinary holders, and its market today is driven largely by hopes of recovery through burns. The original harm was caused by Terraform Labs rather than the current community, so the criterion stays in pass, lowered for that concrete history.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying LUNC with full payment and immediate delivery is available on major exchanges, and coins can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL-rated asset.
No exchange-traded fund holding LUNC was identified in this review. Any fund must be checked separately for lending of the coin and interest income.
LUNC pays network fees but is rarely used as money. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Delegating LUNC to a validator earns a variable share of fee and tax rewards, with slashing risk for validator misbehaviour; no new LUNC is minted. This is not interest, though delegated income is largely passive.
Margin trading in LUNC is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
LUNC perpetual futures make up most of its trading volume, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending LUNC on lending platforms or exchange programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
LUNC yield products built on lending, leverage or basis trading pay interest or interest-like returns and fail. Validator staking is covered under staking.
