Can a Muslim hold Kite?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding KITE pays nothing; staking rewards are variable and paid for running the network, with a published target of about 4%.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. KITE has no lending function, and its MiCA white paper says it gives no profit or repayment rights. Staking rewards are paid first in KITE and later in stablecoins, with a target of about 4% a year, and validators and delegators that fail availability or integrity rules lose pending unlocks or future rewards. That is payment for work with risk, not a loan return. Because delegators earn it passively and the rate is published as a target, the score is 90 rather than 100.
CryptoUmmah, the authoritative source, scores riba 85/100 and finds no interest mechanism.
KITE is the native staking token of a live blockchain and is required for its operating roles.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). KITE is the native token of Kite Chain, which launched its mainnet in April 2026, and it must be staked to run modules, validate or delegate. Its white paper describes it as a utility token with no ownership or redemption rights, so it is not a claim on a company. CryptoUmmah, the authoritative source, rates it halal, so the general scholarly debate about crypto is reflected in confidence rather than in this score.
KITE serves a productive network with no gambling mechanics; speculation is market behaviour, not protocol design.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. Kite addresses a concrete problem, payments between AI agents, and has no lottery, prediction or meme features. CryptoUmmah, the authoritative source, finds that speculation reflects trader behaviour rather than protocol design. No coin-specific gambling feature is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
The protocol earns commissions on AI agent payments and services, which is permissible service income.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. According to CryptoUmmah, Kite's income is a commission on AI-agent payment and transaction activity, and the white paper plans to pay staking rewards increasingly from stablecoin income. Fees for a payment and identity service are permissible. No source shows interest-based or other impermissible revenue, so the criterion is at the maximum.
About three quarters of supply is still locked, team and investor unlocks start in November 2026, and open-source status of the core chain is not confirmed.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. Kite publishes a regulated MiCA white paper with supply, vesting and staking rules, and its leadership is named. But only 25.68% of the 10 billion supply was circulating on 1 October 2026, and team and investor tokens (32% of supply by CoinDesk's figures) unlock over four years after a one-year cliff from launch, so large new supply begins around November 2026.
CryptoUmmah, the authoritative source, scores gharar 58/100 because it could not confirm that the core blockchain is open source and treasury and staking disclosures are incomplete, and CoinMarketCap shows a CertiK rating of 4.2/10. These are concrete transparency gaps, so the criterion is at caution.
KITE is used for staking roles on a network built for AI agent identity and stablecoin payments.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. KITE is staked by module owners, validators and delegators to run Kite Chain, which serves AI agent identity and stablecoin payments through Kite Agent Passport. These are permissible infrastructure uses. Data on actual network activity is limited and recorded as a gap, but no impermissible use is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Fully paid spot KITE is available on Binance, Upbit, Bithumb and other exchanges and can be held in self-custody.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. KITE has traded spot on Binance, Upbit and Bithumb since 3 November 2025 and can be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leverage, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Kite aims at a useful service, safe and accountable payments by AI agents; no concrete harm is documented.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. Kite gives AI agents verifiable identity, spending rules and cheap stablecoin payments, which can make automated commerce more accountable. No source shows the network or token being used for fraud, sanctions evasion or a security incident. The criterion is therefore at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying KITE with full payment and immediate delivery is available on Binance, Upbit, Bithumb and other exchanges, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL asset.
Not available: no exchange-traded fund holding KITE was found as of 1 October 2026. A fund that holds KITE itself would be judged like spot.
KITE is a staking token; payments on Kite Chain are made in stablecoins, not in KITE. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Native staking pays variable rewards, targeted at about 4% a year, for running modules, validating or delegating; those who fail availability or integrity rules forfeit pending unlocks or rewards. This is payment for work with risk. Minimums are high (166,667 KITE to delegate), so retail staking usually goes through third parties whose products should be checked.
Margin trading in KITE is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
KITE futures and perpetual contracts are traded on large exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending KITE through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Yield products beyond native staking, such as exchange 'earn' accounts or lending markets, may get their return from lending and must be checked; lending-based yield fails.
