Can a Muslim hold Gala?8 Shariah criteria
3 pass · 5 caution · 0 failGALA pays no interest; new tokens go to node operators for running nodes.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Holding GALA pays nothing. New GALA is issued to Founder’s Node operators for providing computing resources, and under the 2026 model they also receive half of gas fees; both are variable pay for a service, not a return on a loan. CryptoUmmah finds only minor riba (71.4/100). No interest mechanism was found in the token itself, so the criterion is at the maximum.
GALA is the gas and utility token of a working blockchain.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). GALA pays transaction fees on GalaChain and is used across its games and other products, so it has a real function. Sharlife lists Gala as Grey without public reasons, and no coin-specific defect in the nature of the token was found. The criterion is at the maximum.
The ecosystem includes Gala Pump, a launchpad for new speculative tokens.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. GALA itself is a utility token, and playing games for rewards is not betting. But Gala promotes Gala Pump, a tool for launching and trading new tokens, including artist tokens, where gains depend mostly on price speculation. CryptoUmmah scores maysir 70/100. This concrete feature puts the criterion at caution, at the top of the band.
Gala earns from games, music, film and token launches; part of this entertainment content is disputed.
This criterion asks how the ecosystem earns and whether that income is impermissible. Gala’s business is digital entertainment: games, a music platform, a film platform and tools for trading and launching tokens. Games as such are permissible, but music and film content is disputed among scholars and is not screened, and a token launchpad earns from speculation. The shares of each line are not disclosed, so the criterion is at caution. Sharlife rates Gala Grey.
A 2026 exploit drained about 2.0 billion GALA from nine wallets, and the supply cap was removed by a vote.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. On 18 August 2026 a signature flaw that had passed several audits let an attacker move about 2.0 billion GALA out of nine wallets. In April 2026 node operators voted to replace the 50 billion hard cap with open-ended emissions, and the implementation date is not set. CryptoUmmah scores gharar 58.1/100. These concrete uncertainties put the criterion at caution.
GALA is used for gas and for games, music, film and token trading inside the ecosystem.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. GALA pays fees on GalaChain and buys items in games, which is acceptable. It is also used on a music platform, a film platform and for speculative token launches, uses that many scholars treat as doubtful. Because these are core parts of the ecosystem and not incidental, the criterion is at caution.
Fully paid spot GALA is widely available and can be held in self-custody.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. GALA trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and can be held in a self-custody wallet on Ethereum or GalaChain. The criterion is at the maximum.
Holders of nine wallets lost about 2.0 billion GALA in the August 2026 exploit.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. Gala gives players ownership of game items and pays node operators. But the August 2026 exploit caused real loss to the affected holders, and Gala’s report does not say whether they were compensated. The team responded within hours and published a detailed report, so the criterion is at caution, at the top of the band.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying GALA with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Note that Sharlife lists Gala as Grey (doubtful).
No exchange-traded fund or product holding GALA was found in the sources collected. A product that held GALA would be judged like spot; its structure would need checking.
GALA pays gas fees on GalaChain and for items inside Gala products. Using it for permissible purposes there is acceptable; tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia’s MUI reject crypto as general currency.
GALA has no open staking. Rewards go to operators of Founder’s Nodes for running nodes, which is pay for work. Exchange products advertised as GALA staking or earn pay from other sources, usually lending, and must be checked.
Margin trading is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
Futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending GALA through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Yield products on GALA get their return from lending or similar interest-like sources and fail. Liquidity pools on Gala Swap carry their own risks and need separate checking.
