Can a Muslim hold Artificial Superintelligence Alliance?8 Shariah criteria
8 pass · 0 caution · 0 failNo interest at protocol level; staking pays variable rewards with slashing risk.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. FET has no lending function at the protocol level. Native staking pays variable rewards from about 3% inflation and fees for securing Fetch.ai, and validators that double-sign lose 10% of their stake, a risk delegators share. Islamic Finance Guru, the first authoritative source that rates this coin, lists it as halal; CryptoUmmah's concern about inflation-funded rewards does not make them a return on a loan, so the criterion is at the maximum.
FET is the working token of an AI agent network and its own blockchain.
Mal is property that Islamic law recognises as having value. FET pays for agent registration and AI services, buys compute and secures the Fetch.ai chain. IFG rates it permissible, so the general debate on whether crypto is property is reflected in confidence rather than in this score.
FET has no chance-based payout or game mechanics.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. FET is a utility and staking token with no lottery or meme feature; ordinary price swings are not maysir. CryptoUmmah points to a speculative premium, but no coin-specific gambling mechanism is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
The network earns from AI services, agent registration and transaction fees.
This criterion asks how the project earns. FET is spent on AI services, agent registration, compute and transaction fees, which are payments for services. No interest-based or other impermissible revenue was found, and IFG lists the coin as halal, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Supply and chain data are public, but a dispute over 286 million FET exposed weak disclosure inside the alliance.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. FET supply, conversion rates and staking parameters are public. The score is lowered within pass for a concrete governance problem: after Ocean Protocol left the alliance in October 2025, Fetch.ai's CEO alleged that Ocean had converted OCEAN into about 286 million FET (about $84 million) and moved large amounts to exchanges and market makers without proper disclosure, and threatened legal action. CryptoUmmah also notes the lack of verifiable audit documentation.
FET is used for AI services, agent registration, compute, staking and governance.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. FET pays for AI agent services and Almanac registration, buys compute on CUDOS, secures the chain and is used to vote. These are permissible uses, and no impermissible main use is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Fully paid spot FET is widely available and can be held in a self-custody wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. FET trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and can be held in self-custody on Fetch.ai, Ethereum and other chains. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leverage, so the criterion is at the maximum.
FET supports open AI agent and compute infrastructure.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. The alliance builds open-source AI agent tools and decentralised compute. The Ocean dispute is counted under uncertainty, and no other concrete harm specific to FET was found, so the criterion is at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying FET with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet.
No FET exchange-traded fund was found. A product that holds FET itself would be judged like spot; its structure would need to be checked.
FET is used to pay for AI services and agent registration, which is payment for a service. Using it as general money falls under Tier-1 positions such as Indonesia's MUI, which rules that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Native delegation on Fetch.ai pays variable rewards from inflation and fees for securing the network; validators that double-sign lose 10% of stake, and unbonding takes 21 days. This is payment for work with risk. Third-party platforms advertising up to 10% APY should be checked for where their return comes from.
Margin trading in FET is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
FET futures and perpetuals are offered by derivatives exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending FET through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Exchange 'earn' products and lending pools on FET pay a return funded by lending interest; this is treated as interest whatever it is called.
