Can a Muslim hold Decentraland?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding MANA pays no interest; it has no staking or yield function.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. MANA is an ERC-20 payment and voting token with no native staking or interest function, so holding it produces no return. CryptoUmmah notes that the DAO treasury composition is undisclosed, but no interest-bearing holding is documented. Sharlife lists MANA as permissible, so the criterion is at the maximum.
MANA is the token used to buy land, names and items in Decentraland and to vote in its DAO.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). MANA pays for LAND, names and wearables in the Decentraland marketplace and gives a vote in the DAO. Sharlife, the first authoritative source that rates it, lists it as permissible. The Shariyah Review Bureau's assessment disagrees, saying Decentraland adds no real-world value and has very few users; that view is recorded in positions and confidence, while this criterion follows the authoritative source.
MANA is not a game of chance, but trading in MANA and virtual land is heavily speculative.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. MANA is a utility and voting token, not a game of chance. CryptoUmmah scores maysir 64.1/100 because speculative trading of MANA and LAND parcels coexists with their use and there are few controls on speculation; MANA is about 98.3% below its 2021 high. The criterion stays at pass, below the maximum.
The DAO earns marketplace fees on sales of land, names and items; no impermissible income is documented.
This criterion asks how the issuer or ecosystem earns and whether that income is impermissible. The DAO receives a 2.5% fee on primary marketplace sales and part of OpenSea fees on LAND, Estates, Names and wearables, plus a 222 million MANA vesting fund; the Foundation was funded by the 2017 token sale. These are fees for sales of virtual goods, and no interest or other impermissible income is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Founders, allocation, DAO powers and fees are published, and the MANA contract cannot be changed.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. Decentraland's founders, its ICO allocation, the DAO's powers and its fee rules are public, and the documentation states that no one, including the DAO, can modify the MANA contract. CryptoUmmah notes an undisclosed treasury composition and no documented audits, but the token's terms are clear. No concrete uncertainty about what holders own was found, so the criterion is at the maximum.
MANA buys land and items, but the world hosts gambling-adjacent games and contested content, and its user base is small.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. MANA's main uses, land, names, wearables and DAO votes, are permissible. But CryptoUmmah notes gambling-adjacent games, speculative land flipping and entertainment of contested permissibility inside the metaverse, and the Shariyah Review Bureau says the platform's users are extremely few. These concrete concerns put the criterion at caution, although Sharlife lists MANA as permissible.
Fully paid spot MANA is widely available and can be held in self-custody.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. MANA trades spot with full payment and delivery on Upbit, Binance and many other exchanges, and as an ERC-20 token it can be held in self-custody. The criterion is at the maximum.
Decentraland offers a creator economy and social space; no fraud or hack involving MANA is documented.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. Decentraland lets creators earn from games, wearables and events, and runs open community programmes such as buildathons. No source collected documents fraud or a hack involving MANA. The harm from gambling-adjacent content is counted under usage, so this criterion is at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying MANA with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available on exchanges, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Avoid using MANA inside the world for gambling-style games.
No exchange-traded fund or product holding MANA was found in the sources collected. A product that held MANA would be judged like spot; its structure would need checking.
MANA is used to pay for land, names, wearables and other items inside Decentraland. Using it for permissible purchases inside the world is acceptable; gambling-style games are not.
Not available natively: MANA has no staking function and secures no network. Products marketed as MANA staking get their return from somewhere else, usually lending or incentives, and must be checked.
Margin trading is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
Futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending MANA through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
MANA pays holders nothing itself. Yield products on MANA get their return from lending or similar interest-like sources and fail.
