COMP is the governance token of Compound, a lending protocol where users earn interest on deposits and pay interest on loans.
Compound is a lending protocol on Ethereum and several other networks. People deposit crypto to earn interest, and others borrow against collateral and pay interest. Interest rates change with how much of each market is borrowed, and governance sets the rate models.
COMP is the governance token. Holders vote, or delegate votes, on interest-rate models, new markets and the treasury. The supply is fixed at 10 million COMP, all in circulation.
Governance has been contested: in July 2024 a large holder group passed a proposal to move 499,000 COMP from the treasury into a vault it controlled, and the dispute ended with a promise to share part of the protocol reserves with COMP stakers. A staking design that would pay stakers from reserves was proposed in March 2025.
