BTT is the token of the BitTorrent ecosystem and the staking token of BitTorrent Chain, a proof-of-stake bridge chain linked to TRON.

BitTorrent is a long-running peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. The BitTorrent Token (BTT) was launched on TRON in January 2019 to reward people for sharing bandwidth and storage. BTT is used in BitTorrent Speed, in the BTFS storage network and on BitTorrent Chain (BTTC).

BTTC is a proof-of-stake chain that connects TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain. Validators must stake at least 1 trillion BTT and earn rewards from fees and a capped reward pool; ordinary holders can delegate to them and share the rewards.

When BTTC launched, the old token was renamed BTTOLD and swapped for new BTT at 1 to 1,000, giving a total supply of 990 trillion BTT. Large shares went to the TRON Foundation (20%), the team and BitTorrent Foundation (19%) and the BitTorrent ecosystem (19.9%); some allocations keep releasing until January 2029.

In 2023 the SEC sued Justin Sun and related entities over TRX and BTT. In March 2026 the case was settled: Rainberry, the BitTorrent developer, agreed to pay a $10 million penalty, and claims against Sun and the foundations were to be dismissed, without admission of the allegations.
