Can a Muslim hold BitTorrent [New]?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding BTT pays nothing; staking rewards are paid for validation from fees and a capped reward pool, and delegators share them passively.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. BTT has no lending or interest function. On BitTorrent Chain, validators earn signature, block (fee) and checkpoint rewards for securing the network, and holders can delegate to validators and share those rewards. This is payment for validation work, not a return on a loan. Because delegators earn it passively through a protocol delegation mechanism, the score is 90 rather than 100. Sharlife lists BTT as permissible, and CryptoUmmah notes that staking returns are variable and performance-based.
BTT is the native staking and fee token of a working chain and is used in BitTorrent's file-sharing and storage services.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). BTT is staked to run BitTorrent Chain, pays its fees and is used in BitTorrent Speed and BTFS storage, so it has a real function. Sharlife, the authoritative source, lists it as permissible, so the general scholarly debate about crypto is reflected in confidence rather than in this score.
BTT has no gambling mechanics; speculation around it is market behaviour.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. BTT is tied to file-sharing, storage and a staking chain, and has no lottery, prediction or meme features. CryptoUmmah points to speculative trading, but that is a market feature rather than a coin mechanism, and no derivatives share data was collected. The criterion is at the maximum.
BTT pays for network fees, staking and file-sharing incentives; no impermissible income is shown.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. On BitTorrent Chain, fees go to validators, and BTT rewards users who share bandwidth and storage. No source shows interest-based, gambling or other impermissible revenue tied to the token, so the criterion is at the maximum. The SEC settlement concerned how the token was offered, which is covered under uncertainty and benefit.
Most supply went to TRON- and BitTorrent-linked entities, reward and inflation rules can be changed by governance, and the token was the subject of an SEC case.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. The whitepaper publishes the allocation and release schedule, but it shows heavy concentration: TRON Foundation 20%, team and BitTorrent Foundation 19% and BitTorrent ecosystem 19.9%, with some allocations releasing until January 2029. Staking rewards and the inflation cap can be adjusted by on-chain governance, and validators have equal votes but must stake at least 1 trillion BTT.
The SEC sued Justin Sun and related entities in 2023 over TRX and BTT; the case settled in March 2026 with a $10 million penalty for Rainberry and no admission. CryptoUmmah scores gharar 56.8/100 for governance concentration, dilution and weak audit documentation. These are concrete, coin-specific uncertainties, so the criterion is at caution.
BTT is used for staking, fees and file-sharing and storage incentives.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. BTT is staked on BitTorrent Chain, pays its fees and cross-chain costs, and rewards bandwidth and storage in BitTorrent Speed and BTFS. These are permissible uses. Data on how much BTT is actually used in these services is limited and recorded as a gap, but no impermissible use is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
BTT can be held in self-custody on TRON or BitTorrent Chain and bought spot on exchanges.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. BTT exists on TRON and as the native token of BitTorrent Chain, with bridged versions on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, and it trades spot with full payment and delivery. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leverage, so the criterion is at the maximum.
BTT supports file-sharing and storage incentives, but its issuers settled an SEC case that also involved wash-trading allegations about TRX.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. BTT adds incentives to a widely used file-sharing system and a cross-chain network, which is a real benefit. On the other side, the SEC's 2023 case alleged unregistered offers of TRX and BTT and wash trading of TRX; it was settled in March 2026 with a $10 million penalty for Rainberry and without admission of the allegations. The token itself is not shown to be a tool for fraud or sanctions evasion, so the criterion stays in the pass band with a reduced score.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying BTT with full payment and immediate delivery is available on exchanges, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL asset.
Not available: no exchange-traded fund holding BTT was found as of 1 October 2026. A fund that holds BTT itself would be judged like spot.
BTT pays for services inside its own ecosystem (fees, bandwidth, storage) but is not used as general money. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Native staking on BitTorrent Chain pays validators and their delegators variable rewards from fees and a capped reward pool for validation work, with lock-up and unbonding periods. This is payment for work, not interest. Exchange 'staking' products that promise a fixed return should be checked.
Margin trading in BTT is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
BTT futures and perpetual contracts are traded on large exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending BTT through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Yield products beyond native staking, such as exchange 'earn' accounts or lending markets, may get their return from lending and must be checked; lending-based yield fails.
