Can a Muslim hold Bitcoin SV?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding BSV pays nothing; miners earn block rewards and fees for proof-of-work, not interest.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. BSV is a proof-of-work coin with no staking, lending or interest function in the protocol. New coins go to miners for the work and cost of producing blocks, which is a payment for work with real risk. CryptoUmmah notes that some third-party custodial products marketed as BSV 'staking' carry interest; those are outside the protocol and are covered under trading mechanisms. Sharlife lists BSV as permissible, so the criterion is at the maximum.
BSV is the native coin of a working proof-of-work network with a fixed supply and real uses.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). BSV is the native coin of a running blockchain: it pays transaction fees, rewards miners and is used for payments and recording data. Its supply is capped at 21 million coins and there was no premine or token sale. Sharlife, the authoritative source, lists it as permissible, so the general scholarly debate about crypto is reflected in confidence rather than in this score.
BSV has no gambling mechanics; its volatility is ordinary market risk.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. BSV has no lottery, prediction or meme mechanics; it is a payment and data network. CryptoUmmah points to speculation relative to adoption, but that is a feature of the market, not of the coin, and no data on a derivatives-dominated market was collected. With no coin-specific gambling feature documented, the criterion is at the maximum.
There is no issuer income: miners earn fees and block rewards for securing the network.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. BSV has no company treasury or protocol revenue; users pay fees to miners, who also receive new coins. The BSV Association coordinates software development. No source shows interest-based or other impermissible income, so the criterion is at the maximum.
The project's best-known backer was found to have forged documents, and in 2021 the network suffered reorganisation attacks while one pool held most of the hashrate.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. The rules of BSV are public and the supply is fixed, but two concrete facts add real uncertainty. First, Craig Wright, long the public face of BSV, was ruled by a UK court in March 2024 not to be Satoshi Nakamoto, and he later had to post that the court found he had forged documents on a grand scale; the project's founding narrative rested heavily on his claim.
Second, in June and July 2021 BSV suffered block reorganisation attacks, and at the time one pool, Taal, controlled 78% of the hashrate, showing that transaction finality on a small proof-of-work chain can be weak. CryptoUmmah scores gharar 54.8/100 on the Wright issue. Sharlife lists the coin permissible, and development is now coordinated by the BSV Association, so the status is caution rather than fail.
BSV is used for payments and for recording data on-chain.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. BSV is designed for low-fee payments and for storing data and documents on-chain, and its node software is built for very high throughput. These are permissible uses, and no impermissible use is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
BSV can be owned outright in a self-custody wallet and bought spot on exchanges that list it.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. BSV is a native coin that can be held in a self-custody wallet and bought with full payment and delivery on exchanges that list it. Some large exchanges, including Binance in 2019, delisted it, which narrows the choice of venues but does not make ownership impermissible. The criterion is at the maximum.
BSV offers cheap payments and data recording, but its history is tied to a backer found to have forged evidence and pursued critics in court.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. BSV's low fees and large blocks offer a real benefit for payments and data. Against that, the coin's history is closely tied to Craig Wright, whom a UK court found to have lied and forged documents, and who pursued critics and developers in court; major platforms boycotted BSV in 2019 partly for this reason. The network itself is not shown to be a tool for fraud or sanctions evasion, so the criterion stays in the pass band with a reduced score.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying BSV with full payment and immediate delivery is possible on exchanges that list it, and the coins can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL asset.
Not available: no exchange-traded fund holding BSV was found as of 1 October 2026. A fund that holds BSV itself would be judged like spot.
BSV is designed for payments and is used for small payments within its ecosystem. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible, so this use stays at caution.
Not available natively: BSV is a proof-of-work coin, so there is no staking. Products marketed as BSV 'staking' get their return from somewhere else, usually lending, and must be checked.
Margin trading in BSV is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
BSV futures and perpetual contracts are traded on large exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending BSV through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
BSV has no protocol yield for holders. Yield products on BSV, including custodial 'staking' that CryptoUmmah flags, get their return from lending and fail.
