Can a Muslim hold Beam?8 Shariah criteria
6 pass · 2 caution · 0 failBEAM pays no interest; staking rewards are variable, but delegation is passive and the treasury holds some lending tokens.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Holding BEAM pays nothing. Validators and delegators earn gas fees, protocol fees and seasonal grants, which vary with network use and uptime, so this is pay for securing the network. Two points reduce the score: delegators earn passively, and slashing cuts only rewards, not principal; and the treasury held about $3.16 million in Syrup USDC, a lending token, on 30 June 2026 (about 2% of the treasury). The criterion passes with a reduced score.
BEAM is the gas and staking token of a working blockchain.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). BEAM pays for every transaction on Beam Network, is staked to validate blocks, gives governance votes and is accepted as payment in ecosystem apps. These are real functions, and no coin-specific defect in the nature of the token was found. The criterion is at the maximum.
BEAM is a utility token; the link to a leveraged trading app is indirect.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. BEAM itself has no lottery or betting mechanism, and games that use it are entertainment, not wagering. The Beam ecosystem does include Dreamcash, a trading app with up to 40x leverage, but BEAM is not the instrument traded there. The criterion passes with a small reduction for this link.
About a third of the Beam Foundation treasury is equity in a leveraged trading app.
This criterion asks how the ecosystem earns and whether that income is impermissible. Beam calls BEAM the central value hub of its ecosystem and describes a buy and burn that decreases the supply over time. The treasury was worth about $148.6 million on 30 June 2026. Most of it is venture investments in games, AI and compute, which are acceptable. But the largest position, 32.98%, is Dreamcash, an app Beam founded that offers perpetual futures with up to 40x leverage, and some cash sits in yield-bearing lending tokens.
An impermissible source is present and material, so the criterion is at caution.
The emissions schedule is not published and the top 10 addresses hold 59.1% of BEAM.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. Beam is transparent about its treasury: it publishes a dashboard and quarterly reports. But the documentation says more information on the emissions schedule is still to come, CoinMarketCap shows the top 10 addresses holding 59.1% of the supply, and Beam says it is unattached to any specific chain, so the role of Beam Network itself may change. These concrete points put the criterion at caution.
BEAM is used for gas, staking, governance and payments in games and apps.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. BEAM pays gas on Beam Network, is staked to secure it, votes in governance and buys in-game items. These uses are acceptable. A small reduction reflects that part of the ecosystem that BEAM governs and funds is a leveraged trading app.
Fully paid spot BEAM is widely available and can be held in self-custody.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. BEAM trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and can be held in a self-custody wallet on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base or Beam Network. The criterion is at the maximum.
Beam funds games, compute and developer tools; no concrete harm to holders was found.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. Beam gives developers an open network and tools, funds early projects through grants and a regulated venture fund, and reports its treasury in public. No specific harm to users, such as an exploit or loss of funds, was found in the sources collected. The criterion is at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying BEAM with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet.
No exchange-traded fund or product holding BEAM was found in the sources collected. A product that held BEAM would be judged like spot; its structure would need checking.
BEAM pays gas fees on Beam Network and is accepted in ecosystem games and apps. Using it for permissible purposes there is acceptable; tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia’s MUI reject crypto as general currency.
Running a Beam Node is work rewarded with variable gas and protocol fees, which is acceptable. Delegating BEAM is passive, and penalties cut only rewards, not principal; part of the rewards are grants from a treasury with some impermissible holdings. Exchange earn products on BEAM usually pay from lending and must be checked.
Margin trading is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
Futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending BEAM through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Yield products on BEAM outside native staking get their return from lending or similar interest-like sources and fail.
