Can a Muslim hold ApeCoin?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failAPE has no interest-bearing design; staking returns are variable but earned passively.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. CryptoUmmah finds that the core design has no interest-bearing instruments and that staking most closely resembles mudarabah, a profit-sharing contract, with variable, non-guaranteed returns. Stakers earn passively without doing network work, so the criterion is just below the maximum. Sharlife lists APE as permissible.
APE is the gas token of ApeChain and an access token for the Otherside world.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). APE pays transaction fees on ApeChain and is used for access and purchases in the Bored Ape ecosystem. Sharlife, the first authoritative source that rates it, lists it as permissible, so the criterion is at the maximum.
APE is not a game of chance, but it is deeply tied to speculative NFT culture.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. APE itself has no gambling mechanics. CryptoUmmah scores maysir 53.6/100 because the token is intertwined with NFT culture where values follow social sentiment, and APE trades more than 99% below its 2022 high. The criterion stays at pass, below the maximum.
APE has no issuer income model; network fees are paid in APE and no impermissible income is documented.
This criterion asks how the issuer or ecosystem earns and whether that income is impermissible. APE is fully issued, and ApeChain charges gas in APE for transactions. No interest or other impermissible income tied to the token is documented, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Supply is fixed and fully circulating, but no audits are named and control has moved from a DAO to a company.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. All 1 billion APE circulate, so supply holds no surprises. CryptoUmmah found no named audit firms or published findings and scores gharar 56.6/100, and press reports say governance moved from the DAO to a company, ApeCo. These gaps keep the criterion at pass, below the maximum.
APE pays ApeChain fees, but featured apps there include a parlay betting platform and leveraged trading.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. APE pays gas on ApeChain and gives access to games and virtual worlds. But the apps featured on the ApeChain website include Clutch Market, a parlay betting platform, and gTrade, a leveraged trading app, and much activity is NFT speculation. These concrete uses put the criterion at caution, although Sharlife lists APE as permissible.
Fully paid spot APE is widely available and can be held in self-custody.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. APE trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and can be held in self-custody as an ERC-20 token. The criterion is at the maximum.
APE supports a creator and gaming community, but holders have suffered very large losses.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. APE supports games, virtual worlds and creator communities. CryptoUmmah notes that the token has lost the vast majority of its value and that ApeChain activity is declining. No fraud by the project was found. The criterion is at pass, just below the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying APE with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available on exchanges, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Avoid betting and leveraged apps on ApeChain.
No exchange-traded fund or product holding APE was found in the sources collected. A product that held APE would be judged like spot; its structure would need checking.
APE pays transaction fees on ApeChain and purchases in the Bored Ape ecosystem. Using it for permissible purchases is acceptable; betting apps are not.
APE secures no network of its own. APE staking pays variable, non-guaranteed returns that CryptoUmmah likens to profit-sharing; check the source of rewards before using.
Margin trading is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
Futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending APE through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
APE pays holders nothing itself. Yield products on APE get their return from lending or similar interest-like sources and fail.
