Coinbase is a US-listed exchange with licences in the US, EU (MiCA), UK and Singapore and a conditional licence in Dubai, and it keeps client assets segregated. Spot trading with full settlement is available, but Coinbase offers no Shariah-certified product and does not screen coins, so a Muslim user must stay in spot, avoid futures, perpetuals, loans and USDC rewards, and check each coin separately. Its direct service in Muslim-majority markets is limited. Spot purchases on Coinbase (simple Buy and Sell or Advanced trade) settle immediately into the user's account, which meets the requirement of immediate exchange (qabd) for currency-like assets under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1 and Standard 20. Futures and perpetual-style futures (Coinbase Financial Markets in the US, Coinbase International for non-US users) involve deferred settlement and leverage and should be avoided. Crypto-backed loans (Borrow) and USDC rewards pay or charge interest-like amounts and are riba under AAOIFI Shariah Standard 1. Staking rewards are not reviewed by a Shariah board and should only be used after a separate check of the protocol. Coinbase has no Islamic account and no Shariah-certified earn product, and its listing review is not a Shariah screen, so each coin must be checked on Liberandum before buying. Reliability is 6.6/10. Coinbase does not publish a Merkle-tree proof of reserves; customer crypto balances are disclosed in audited SEC filings instead. Per its FY2025 annual report it holds a NYDFS BitLicense and state money-transmitter licences, a MiCA licence in Luxembourg covering the EEA, FCA authorisation as an e-money institution in the UK (plus cryptoasset registration, February 2025), a MAS Major Payment Institution licence and a conditional VASP licence from Dubai's VARA. The SEC lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice on 28 February 2025. In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support staff had leaked personal data of 69,461 customers (from December 2024); no passwords, keys or funds were taken from Coinbase, it offered to reimburse customers tricked into sending funds and estimated costs of USD 180-400 million. There is no dedicated user-protection fund. Availability: full service in the US, UK and EU. In Dubai the licence is conditional and the exchange targets institutional clients; access in most other Muslim-majority countries is not confirmed by Coinbase, and Nigeria reportedly blocked access in February 2024.

Register and complete verification
Create an account on coinbase.com or in the Coinbase app and complete identity verification (ID document and selfie). Check that your country is supported; in the UAE the licensed entity serves institutional clients only.
Deposit fiat without rewards
Add cash by bank transfer or card. Do not opt in to USDC rewards and do not use Borrow (crypto-backed loans): both involve interest-like payments.
Check each coin on Liberandum
Coinbase does not screen coins for Shariah compliance. Check the coin's halal status on Liberandum before buying.
Trade only spot
Use Buy and Sell or the Advanced spot order book so both sides settle immediately. Avoid Futures, perpetual-style futures, leverage and options on Coinbase and Coinbase International.
