Can a Muslim hold Ethereum Name Service?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 0 caution · 1 failHolding ENS pays nothing; the DAO's interest income stays in its treasury and is not distributed to holders.
Riba means interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. ENS Labs states that ENS holders have voting rights but no dividend or revenue-distribution rights, and there is no staking reward. The DAO's Endowment does earn lending interest, but that stays in the treasury and is judged under business model. With no interest reaching holders, the criterion gets the maximum score.
ENS governs a widely used naming service, but its only function is governance; names are paid for in ETH.
Mal is property that Islamic law recognises as having value and that can be owned and traded. ENS gives votes over a working service that earned about $3.93 million of registration fees over the year to 1 October 2026 and over a treasury and Endowment. The score is lowered within pass for a concrete limit: the token is not needed to register or use names, so its utility is limited to governance.
ENS is not a gambling token, but most of its trading volume is in perpetual futures.
Maysir is gambling: winning or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. The token has no chance-based payout. On 1 October 2026 perpetual futures were about 85% of ENS/USDT volume on Binance and Bybit combined (single-day snapshot). The futures dominance lowers the score within pass.
Name registrations are a permissible service, but Endowment yield, partly lending interest, was about 31% of DAO income in H1 2026, far above the 5% limit.
This criterion asks how the DAO earns and whether 5% or more of its income comes from impermissible sources. Registration and renewal fees are payment for a service. But the DAO's Endowment, $67.65 million at the end of June 2026, is managed by KPK in a balanced mix of staking and lending strategies: about 40% is in stablecoins, which have averaged 5.45% APY since 2023, and it supplies assets to lending protocols such as Aave and Morpho (for example $4.88 million of DAI supplied to Aave in July 2026). KPK reports that Endowment yield was roughly 31% of DAO income in H1 2026.
Even if only the stablecoin lending part counts as interest, it is well above 5%. CryptoUmmah asks only for light purification, but this rests on a concrete, primary-sourced fact, so the criterion fails.
Supply is capped, governance is on-chain and the Endowment publishes detailed monthly and half-year reports.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information in a deal. The ENS supply is capped at 100 million, executable proposals are voted on-chain, and KPK publishes monthly and half-year Endowment reports with on-chain accounting; it reports no loss of principal since 2023. No concrete transparency problem was found, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
ENS governs a naming service used to make blockchain addresses readable.
This criterion looks at what the asset and service are actually used for. The token votes on a service that maps readable names to addresses and profiles, a permissible use. The Endowment's investments are judged under business model. No impermissible primary use was found, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
Fully paid spot ENS is widely available and can be held in one's own wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. ENS trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges such as Binance and Bybit and can be withdrawn to a self-custody Ethereum wallet. Ownership does not depend on derivatives, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
ENS reduces costly address mistakes and gives users a portable identity; no concrete harm specific to ENS was found.
Maslahah weighs public benefit against harm. Readable names reduce errors when sending funds and let people carry one profile across applications. No study found links ENS specifically to fraud, sanctions evasion or exploitation at scale, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying ENS with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL-rated asset.
No spot ENS exchange-traded fund was identified in this review. Any fund must be checked separately for lending of the token and interest income.
ENS is a governance token and is not used as a means of payment; names are paid for in ETH. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
ENS has no native staking and delegating votes earns nothing. Products advertised as 'ENS staking' pay from other sources and must be checked product by product.
Margin trading in ENS is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
ENS perpetual futures make up most of its trading volume, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending ENS on lending protocols or exchange programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
ENS yield products built on lending, leverage or basis trading pay interest or interest-like returns and fail. Since ENS has no network reward, any promised yield must come from elsewhere.
