Can a Muslim hold EigenCloud?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failRestaking rewards pay for securing services at the risk of slashing, but delegators earn passively and rewards come mostly from issuance.
Riba is interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. EigenLayer does not lend EIGEN or ETH: stakers delegate to operators who run services (AVSs), and rewards are paid for that work, with stake that can be slashed. ELIP-12 ties incentives to 'slashable and redistributable stake' securing fee-paying services. Rewards are variable, not a fixed promised return. The score is lowered within pass because a delegator earns without doing work himself and most rewards are funded by issuance; CryptoUmmah adds that restaking resembles rehypothecation.
Sharlife, the first authoritative source that rates EigenLayer, marks it compliant.
EIGEN has a defined function: staking to secure services and resolving faults that code alone cannot prove.
This criterion asks whether the asset has real value as property (mal). EIGEN is staked to secure EigenLayer services and is designed to handle 'intersubjective' faults by forking, and it receives rewards for that work. Sharlife, the first authoritative source that rates EigenLayer, marks it compliant. The general scholarly dispute about crypto is not a coin-specific problem, so the criterion is at the maximum.
EIGEN has no chance-based payout; its value is tied to a working restaking and cloud platform.
Maysir is gambling: gaining or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. EIGEN has no lottery-like feature, and its rewards are paid for securing services. Its price fell sharply from the December 2024 high, but ordinary price risk is not maysir. No concrete gambling mechanism was found, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Income comes from fees for security, data and computing services, with no interest-based lending.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. Services pay rewards to operators and stakers for security, and under ELIP-12 a 20% fee on AVS rewards for subsidised stake and EigenCloud fees after operator expenses fund EIGEN buybacks. These are fees for data, computing and verification services. No interest income or other impermissible revenue was found; low revenue is a commercial weakness, not a Shariah problem, so the criterion is at the maximum.
About 55% of supply went to insiders and unlocks monthly, issuance has no cap, and contracts are upgradeable by multisigs.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information. The supply rules are published, but they add concrete uncertainty: investors and early contributors hold roughly 55% of supply, unlocking 4% a month until about September 2027; issuance has no maximum and its allocation can be changed by an Incentives Committee; and the contracts are mostly upgradeable through multisigs. CryptoUmmah scores gharar 57.2/100 and also notes that the airdrop was non-transferable and geo-fenced. The criterion is at caution.
EIGEN is used for staking to secure services and for fault resolution in a working protocol.
This criterion looks at what the asset is actually used for. EIGEN is staked with operators to secure AVSs and to back the intersubjective forking mechanism, and EigenCloud provides data, compute and verification services. These are permissible uses, and no impermissible main use was found, so the criterion is at the maximum.
Fully paid spot EIGEN is widely available and can be held in a self-custody wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. EIGEN trades spot with full payment and delivery on major exchanges and is an ordinary ERC-20 token that can be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leverage, so the criterion is at the maximum.
No concrete fraud or hack involving EIGEN is documented; the project provides security and verifiable computing services.
Maslahah weighs benefit against harm. EigenLayer and EigenCloud provide shared security and verifiable computing to other projects. No source collected documents fraud, a hack or misuse of user funds. Price falls, layoffs and the criticised airdrop are commercial or uncertainty issues counted elsewhere, so the criterion is at the maximum.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying EIGEN with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available, and the tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL asset.
No EIGEN exchange-traded fund was found. A product that holds EIGEN itself would be judged like spot; its structure (backing, no lending of the tokens) would need to be checked.
EIGEN is not used as general money. Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible.
Staking EIGEN through EigenLayer, delegated to an operator that runs AVSs, earns variable rewards for securing services, with stake exposed to slashing. This is payment for work and risk, not a loan; check that a custodial product passes rewards through without lending the tokens.
Margin trading in EIGEN is offered by some exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
EIGEN futures and perpetuals are offered by derivatives exchanges, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending EIGEN through exchange or DeFi lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
Liquid restaking tokens and vaults built on EigenLayer may add lending or leverage to restaking returns. Each product must be checked; returns from lending are riba.
Scholars quotes
The opinion on this is the same as doing the same with any halal assets such as shares – 1) is permissible, 2) is more debatable and there are differing opinions on short-term trading. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article it is not necessary to substantiate the permissibility of something as long as there are no prohibited factors involved in it or surrounding it.Penggunaan cryptocurrency sebagai mata uang hukumnya haram, karena mengandung gharar (ketidakjelasan), dharar (bahaya) dan bertentangan dengan Undang-Undang nomor 7 tahun 2011 tentang Mata Uang dan Peraturan Bank Indonesia nomor 17 tahun 2015 tentang Kewajiban Penggunaan Rupiah di Wilayah Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. The SAC has also resolved that investment and trading of Digital Assets that fulfil the above requirements and which are traded on Digital Asset Exchange (DAX) registered with SC are permissible.Third: In light of the above and given the significant risks associated with this type of currencies and the instability of their transactions, the Council of the Academy recommends pursuing research and studies on issues affecting its ruling.Bitcoin is a digital currency that does not meet the legal and Sharia criteria that make it a currency subject to the rulings of dealing with official legal currencies recognized internationally. According to research and opinion of experts so far, cryptocurrency is not considered ‘ maal ’ (wealth) in Sharia.Muhammadiyah memandang transaksi dan investasi kripto pada dasarnya mubah (boleh) tetapi dengan syarat tertentu. Our current position is 'tawaquf'; we can't say it is halal or haram, but we say it is better not to engage in itAI-assisted analysis checked against sources.
