Can a Muslim hold Bittensor?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding TAO pays nothing; staking rewards are variable emission paid for scored network work, not interest.
Riba means interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Simply holding TAO earns nothing. New TAO and subnet alpha are issued every block and split among subnet owners (18%), miners (41%) and validators with their stakers (41%); miners are paid for AI work and validators for scoring it. Stakers delegate to a validator and receive a variable share of its dividends that depends on how the validator and subnet perform, and subnet staking also carries the alpha token's price risk.
This matches the V1 test for acceptable staking (variable reward, real network work), there is no loan with a guaranteed increase, and Islamic Finance Guru (IFG) rates TAO permissible. The score is slightly below the maximum because delegators do no work themselves and no slashing of delegated stake was found, which some scholars see as closer to a passive return.
TAO is the working token of an AI network: needed to stake, register on subnets and pay fees.
Bittensor is a working chain: it produces a block every 12 seconds, runs many subnets where miners and validators are paid for AI work, and TAO is needed to stake, to register on subnets and to pay fees. That is real utility, not a purely speculative asset. IFG, Sharlife and CryptoUmmah all rate TAO permissible. Some state bodies (Egypt, Turkey, the UAE, Indonesia's MUI) doubt cryptocurrency in general, but none names Bittensor or gives a concrete reason against it, so the criterion gets the maximum score.

TAO has a real function, but subnet alpha tokens turn staking partly into a bet on which subnets will win.
Maysir is gambling: winning or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. Ordinary price swings and futures trading by others are not features of TAO itself, and miners and validators are paid for scored work, so the token is not built for gambling. The score is lowered for one concrete design feature: since February 2025 every subnet has its own alpha token traded against TAO, and subnets receive more new TAO when demand for their alpha rises, so staking on a subnet is partly a bet on which subnets will attract demand.
Fair launch with no pre-sale; emission pays for building and running subnets, and fees are recycled.
This criterion asks how the issuer or protocol earns, and whether any of that income is impermissible. TAO was fair-launched with no pre-sale, and no company collects revenue on behalf of TAO holders. New emission pays subnet owners, miners, validators and stakers for building and running subnets, and registration costs and fees are recycled rather than paid to a treasury. No impermissible income was found, so the criterion gets the maximum score; the Opentensor Foundation's unpublished funding is a data gap, not a violation.
The 21 million cap and the code are public, but the rules change often through upgrades deployed by a multisig, and the chain was halted in 2024.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information in a deal. Some things are clear: TAO is capped at 21 million, issuance halves on a published rule (first halving on 15 December 2025), and the code is open source. The concrete concern is control over the rules. Runtime upgrades go through a 2-of-2 deployment multisig completed by a small sudo group (the 'triumvirate'); ten upgrades were proposed this way in September 2026, and key economic rules (alpha tokens, demand-based emissions, an emission gate) changed several times since 2025.
In July 2024 the Opentensor Foundation halted the network for more than a day after a theft. Holders' reward rules can change quickly and are decided by a small group, so this stays caution, not fail, since nothing is hidden.
Used mainly to pay for and secure AI computation on subnets.
This criterion looks at what the network is actually used for. Bittensor's main activity is paying miners and validators in its subnets for useful work, mostly AI tasks such as model inference and training, and TAO is also used to stake, register on subnets and pay fees. No impermissible activity is shown to be the network's main purpose, so the criterion gets the maximum score. The share of subnets by type was not measured and is recorded as a data gap.
Fully paid spot TAO is widely available, and it can be held in one's own wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. TAO trades spot, with full payment and delivery, on major exchanges such as Binance and OKX, and it can be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet. In the US, the Grayscale Bittensor Trust holds TAO itself and its filings say it does not use leverage or derivatives and will not lend or pledge its TAO. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leveraged wrappers, so the criterion gets the maximum score.
Bittensor offers an open market for AI work; the 2024 theft and concentrated rewards are real harms but do not outweigh that benefit.
Maslahah weighs public benefit against harm. The benefit is an open network where anyone can contribute AI work and be paid for it, without one company controlling access. Two concrete harms lower the score: in July 2024 about $8 million of TAO was stolen from users through a compromised software package, and a June 2025 study of 64 subnets found stake and rewards highly concentrated, with rewards following stake more than the quality of work. These are moderate, so benefit outweighs harm.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying TAO with full payment and immediate delivery is widely available on major exchanges, and coins can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL-rated asset.
The Grayscale Bittensor Trust holds TAO itself, does not use leverage or derivatives, and its filings say its TAO will not be loaned; it trades over the counter and was not yet listed on an exchange. European staked TAO products pass on staking rewards, and their terms were not verified.
Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible. TAO is used mainly to pay for work and fees inside the network rather than for everyday payments.
Rewards come from new emission paid to validators for scoring miners' work, which is acceptable. But staking on a subnet is a swap of TAO into that subnet's alpha token through a pool, so the staker takes on the price risk of a separate token, and rewards depend on demand-based emission rules that change often. Root (subnet 0) staking avoids the swap and is the simpler route. Exchange and pooled staking products add an intermediary.
Margin trading in TAO is offered on major exchanges but is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
TAO perpetual futures make up most of its trading volume, but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending TAO through exchange lending programmes or lending platforms pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba.
TAO yield products built on lending or basis trading pay interest or interest-like returns and fail. Products that only pass on validator staking rewards are closer to the staking assessment, but their source must be checked product by product.

Bittensor (TAO) is deemed permissible (Halal) as it operates a neutral, decentralized AI and compute marketplace. The opinion on this is the same as doing the same with any halal assets such as shares – 1) is permissible, 2) is more debatable and there are differing opinions on short-term trading. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article it is not necessary to substantiate the permissibility of something as long as there are no prohibited factors involved in it or surrounding it.Penggunaan cryptocurrency sebagai mata uang hukumnya haram, karena mengandung gharar (ketidakjelasan), dharar (bahaya) dan bertentangan dengan Undang-Undang nomor 7 tahun 2011 tentang Mata Uang dan Peraturan Bank Indonesia nomor 17 tahun 2015 tentang Kewajiban Penggunaan Rupiah di Wilayah Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. The SAC has also resolved that investment and trading of Digital Assets that fulfil the above requirements and which are traded on Digital Asset Exchange (DAX) registered with SC are permissible.Third: In light of the above and given the significant risks associated with this type of currencies and the instability of their transactions, the Council of the Academy recommends pursuing research and studies on issues affecting its ruling.Bitcoin is a digital currency that does not meet the legal and Sharia criteria that make it a currency subject to the rulings of dealing with official legal currencies recognized internationally. According to research and opinion of experts so far, cryptocurrency is not considered ‘ maal ’ (wealth) in Sharia.Muhammadiyah memandang transaksi dan investasi kripto pada dasarnya mubah (boleh) tetapi dengan syarat tertentu. Our current position is 'tawaquf'; we can't say it is halal or haram, but we say it is better not to engage in itAI-assisted analysis checked against sources.
