Can a Muslim hold Aerodrome Finance?8 Shariah criteria
7 pass · 1 caution · 0 failHolding AERO pays nothing, and veAERO voters are paid from swap fees and incentives, not from lending interest.
Riba means interest or any guaranteed increase on a loan. Simply holding AERO earns nothing. Users who lock AERO as veAERO receive three things: the trading fees of the pools they vote for (fees that staked liquidity providers give up in exchange for AERO emissions), incentives deposited by other projects to attract votes, and a weekly rebase of new AERO that offsets dilution. Swap fees are payment for a trading service, not interest on a loan, and the rebase is a share of new issuance rather than a debt return.
Aerodrome itself runs no lending market; DefiLlama describes all protocol revenue as swap fees passed to voters, and Aero's planned new revenue sources (internal MEV auctions, bridge and aggregator fees from cross-chain Metaswaps, ancillary services and an agent marketplace) name no lending. Incentives are not interest either, but whether paying for votes is permissible is a separate question, weighed under business model. No lending or fixed-return mechanism is shown, so the criterion gets the maximum score; whether some pools hold interest-bearing tokens was not measured and is recorded as a data gap. Sharlife, the authoritative source that names Aerodrome, rates it Shariah-compliant.
AERO governs a busy, working spot exchange and directs its rewards; no concrete problem with the asset itself is shown.
Mal is property that Islamic law recognises as having value and that can be owned and traded. Aerodrome is a real, working service: it earned about $130 million of swap fees in the year to 27 September 2026 (DefiLlama), and Aerodrome and Velodrome together report $342 billion of trading volume. AERO's value comes from locking it to direct rewards and receive a share of fees; it is not a claim on any company or reserve, but it has a genuine function, so the criterion gets the maximum score. Sharlife rates Aerodrome compliant.
The general disagreement among tier-1 bodies about cryptocurrency (Malaysia's SC permits trading digital assets as goods; Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, the UAE GAIAE, Turkey's Diyanet and Indonesia's MUI prohibit it; none names AERO) is reflected in confidence, not in this score.
AERO has no chance-based payout, but its trading is dominated by perpetual futures and the exchange is a major venue for speculative new tokens.
Maysir is gambling: winning or losing by chance rather than through productive exchange. Ordinary price swings are not maysir, and AERO has no lottery or casino mechanics. The market around it is speculative, though. On 27 September 2026 Binance's AERO/USDT perpetual futures contract alone traded about $41.5 million in 24 hours, about four times Binance's AERO spot markets combined (a single-day snapshot).
Aerodrome also promotes itself as a launch venue for new tokens without presales and offers a permissionless Pool Launcher; many such tokens are short-lived speculative bets, but their share of Aerodrome's volume was not measured. The core service, spot swaps with real delivery, is a genuine function, so the status is pass; the concrete speculative patterns lower the score to the bottom of the pass band.
Income is swap fees for a trading service; voters also sell their votes for incentives (bribes), a disputed but unruled practice.
This criterion asks how the protocol earns and whether any of that income is impermissible. Aerodrome's main income is trading fees, typically 0.05% on stable pools and 0.30% on volatile pools; DefiLlama counts about $93.5 million passed to veAERO voters in the year to 27 September 2026. Fees for a swap service are permissible in principle. Voters also receive incentives, often called bribes: tokens that other projects deposit and that are paid only to those who vote AERO emissions to their pool.
ShariaQuant (tier 2) treats trading fees and bribes as permissible; no tier-1 body has ruled on paying for governance votes, and some would see it as payment for a legitimate service (directing liquidity) while others see a bribe for a vote. Aerodrome reported $243 million of voting rewards in 2024 but did not split fees from incentives, so the disputed share cannot be checked against the 5% and 20% thresholds. Fees also come from pools of all kinds of tokens, including speculative launches, and the team receives 5% of emissions. No income from interest or another clearly impermissible source is shown, and Sharlife rates Aerodrome compliant, so the status is pass; the disputed vote incentives lower the score within the band, and the unknown split is recorded as a data gap.
Code and emission rules are public, but supply has no cap and the token system is being redesigned in the Aero merger with details still pending.
Gharar is excessive uncertainty or hidden information in a deal. Much is transparent: Aerodrome's contracts are open source and verified on BaseScan, core contracts are immutable, only the Minter contract can create AERO, and the emission rules are published. There is no supply cap, however: supply has grown from 500 million at launch to about 1.99 billion AERO, and weekly emissions are set by voter governance within wide limits (up to 52% a year).
The larger uncertainty is the Aero merger scheduled for 21 October 2026: VELO will be folded into AERO (5.5% of the combined distribution; Aerodrome positions migrate 1:1), veAERO becomes sAERO, and rewards will be capped by pool revenue, with a global cap expected to hold inflation under 20% a year. The new reward system is new code whose behaviour after launch cannot yet be observed. An Emergency Council and team multisigs keep some administrative powers. These are disclosed risks, not hidden ones. Sharlife rates Aerodrome compliant, but uncapped dilution of roughly 11–12% a year and an untested new reward system are concrete uncertainties, so the status stays caution.
Aerodrome is trading infrastructure for stablecoins, major tokens and tokenised stocks; part of its activity is speculative new-token trading.
This criterion looks at what the asset and its protocol are used for. Aerodrome is spot exchange infrastructure: users swap stablecoins and major tokens with immediate delivery, and since 24 August 2026 Coinbase's tokenised US stocks, backed 1:1 by shares in regulated custody, trade there for eligible users. AERO itself is used to vote on rewards. A notable share of use is disputed: the exchange promotes itself as a launch venue for new tokens, and pools may hold interest-bearing or speculative tokens.
None of this is shown to be the main purpose, so the status is pass; the score is lowered within the band because the exchange actively promotes speculative token launches, whose share of volume was not measured.
Fully paid spot AERO is available on major exchanges and on-chain, and it can be held in one's own wallet.
This criterion asks whether the asset can be owned in a permissible way. AERO trades spot, with full payment and delivery, on Coinbase, Binance, Bybit, Kraken, Upbit and other exchanges, and on Aerodrome itself. It is an ordinary ERC-20 token on Base and can be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet. Ownership does not depend on derivatives or leveraged wrappers; how specific products are structured is assessed under trading mechanisms.
Aerodrome provides real trading liquidity on Base; recorded harms are limited, mainly a 2023 domain hijack and speculative token launches.
Maslahah weighs public benefit against harm. The benefit is real: Aerodrome is a main source of on-chain liquidity on Base, it gives new projects a way to launch without venture presales, and it carries tokenised stocks and stablecoin trading. Recorded harm is moderate: in November 2023 attackers hijacked the Aerodrome and Velodrome website domains and Aerodrome estimated user losses of up to $250,000, mitigated within about 12 hours. Speculative token launches can cause retail losses, but these are counted under maysir, not again here.
That incident lowers the score within the pass band; no study of fraud specific to Aerodrome was found.
How you can use it
Tap a card for the ruling and sourcesBuying AERO with full payment and immediate delivery is available on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken and other exchanges and on Aerodrome itself, and tokens can be moved to a self-custody wallet. Spot is acceptable for a HALAL-rated asset.
No exchange-traded fund holding AERO was found. Any future fund would be assessed like spot, with its structure (no interest income, no lending of AERO) checked separately.
Tier-1 bodies such as Indonesia's MUI rule that using cryptocurrency as currency is not permissible, and paying with crypto is restricted in several jurisdictions. AERO is a governance token and is not used as a payment currency in practice.
AERO has no proof-of-stake validation. Locking AERO as veAERO (to be renamed sAERO under Aero) earns trading fees from the pools one votes for, incentives (bribes) paid for votes, and a rebase of new AERO. Fees are payment for a trading service and are not interest, but paying for votes has not been ruled on by tier-1 bodies and its share of rewards is not published, so this is caution rather than pass. Locks can last up to four years or be permanent.
Margin trading in AERO is never acceptable: it is a deferred exchange with borrowed money and leverage (AAOIFI SS 20).
AERO perpetual futures trade in large volume (about $41.5 million in 24 hours on Binance alone on 27 September 2026), but futures, perpetuals and options always fail under AAOIFI SS 20: deferred exchange without delivery, usually with leverage.
Lending AERO on DeFi money markets or through exchange lending programmes pays depositors interest from borrowers. This is riba. Aerodrome itself does not offer lending.
The main AERO-related yields are providing liquidity to Aerodrome pools (paid in AERO emissions or swap fees) and voting with veAERO; ShariaQuant rates liquidity provision doubtful and the source is mixed, so this is caution. Yield products built on lending, leveraged looping or basis trades pay interest or interest-like returns and fail.
